This week in local lacrosse - May 30th to June 1st

May 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The biggest news in Nanaimo Lacrosse this week certainly has to be the firing of the WLA T-Men coach Bill Hardy along with Assistant Bob Vink. The pair were replaced by Roger Dubyna and Jim Kipp, respectively. Nanaimo, who’ve averaged 18 goals against in their first three starts only allowed 8 against top placed New Westminster Salmonbellies. Nanaimo did lose the game, only scoring 3 goals.

Dubyna will be seen behind the bench Saturday night (7:00pm - Frank Crane) when the T-Men host the Burnaby Lakers. The Lakers are winless in their 4 starts this year and Nanaimo will be looking for their first win under the new coach.

Saturday night also has the Senior B Timbermen playing (7:30 - NIC) against the New West Capitals. Nanaimo have been on a tear of late, having won their last 2 games and will be looking for their 4th win of the year.

The Jr A Timbermen play home Sunday (5:00pm - NIC) against the Delta Islanders. Delta have only 3 wins and this game should be a win for the local boys - who have been playing very well of late - but this is the first contest between the T-Men and Islanders and any win this season will require a full 60 minute effort. The JrA team does play Saturday night in New West.

May 23rd to May 25th - NIC and Frank Crane…..

May 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

For the first time this year Nanaimo Lacrosse fans will need to decide between which of the Senior teams they want to play. Saturday night has both playing at home.

Friday night the action starts with Junior A T-Men (2 wins, 5 losses) hosting Burnaby Lakers (6 wins, 2 losses) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre (7pm). During their last meeting Burnaby doubled the T-Men 17 - 8 but Nanaimo played the same weekend as their overtime heartbreak loss to Victoria. With a few more players back from school expect a closer game and stronger effort. Nanaimo are 2 and 3 at home and have outshot their opponents at NIC 258 to 240. No doubt we’ll see a great game this friday.

Saturday is a much busier day. The Intermediatte A Nanaimo Timbermen start the day (1:30pm, Frank Crane Arena, May 24) against the South Fraser Stickmen. South Fraser and currently 1 win and 5 losses and will meet the T-Men (1 win, 3 losses) for the first time this year. Admission is very reasonable ($2 Adults, $1 Seniors and Students, Children 12 and under are free).

At 7pm, WLA action begins at the Frank Crane Arena with the Langley Thunder visiting the winless Timbermen. This will be the Thunder’s 2nd trip to the island this week - they opened their season Thursday in Victoria. Nanaimo will still be playing without a few of their top players but should expect to play well against Langley.

Only a half an hour later at NIC, Senior B lacrosse finds it’s way back to Nanaimo after a 2 week hiatus. 7:30pm sharp the T-Men host perrenial rivals, the North Shore Indians. Nanaimo will look to avenge their play-off loss last year to North Shore and to welcome their fans back after the few weeks off. Nanaimo are 1 win, 2 losses while the Indians have 1 win and 4 losses.

There are no home games on Sunday but the Ferries will be busy with T-Men on this day. At 2pm the Intermediatte A squad play in Burnaby, at 5pm Junior A Timbermen are being hosted by Coquitlam and at 7pm New West plays host to SrB T-Men. With 4 home games to watch and 3 away should be a busy day for anyone watching the scoreboards…

This week in Local Lax - May 16, 17 and 18

May 13th, 2008 · 2 Comments

With 3 games this weekend their won’t be too many lacrosse fans without a game to choose from.

The WLA Nanaimo Timbermen will open Frank Crane Arena hosting last year Mann Cup Finalist Coquitlam Adanacs. Nanaimo played their first game last weekend, suffering a 20 - 10 loss to Maple Ridge. That game did see newcomer Tyler Perry score 4 goals in his first game in the WLA. Nanaimo were without Scott Ranger, Matt Holland, Kaleb Toth and Mike Morrison…….their top 4 scorers from last year. Expect a much closer game this night. Game time is Saturday at 6:45 pm.

In JrA, Friday night at 8pm Nanaimo (7th place - 1 win, 4 losses) host South Fraser (8th place, 0 wins, 6 losses) as the home boys look for their 2nd win of the season. Sunday afternoon the Timbermen face Coquitlam (3rd place - 3 wins, 1 loss) play in Nanaimo’s Ice Centre. Nanaimo have been outscored 28 - 10 on the road in two games but have fared much better at home having potted 23 and allowing only 22. Expect this weekend to be much the same as the Timbermen would surprise many winning both games. No matter what the outcome, based upon last weeks 11 - 10 loss to Victoria, all in attendance will be in for an exciting show.

The 1 and 1 Timbermen SrB team play away this weekend - in Burnaby against the Burrards (1 win, 2 losses) Wednesday night. Nanaimo’s last home game was post-poned. Nanaimo host long time rivals North Shore next weekend.

This week in local lacrosse

May 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

What was to be another busy weekend in local Box Lacrosse action has seen some changes.

In Junior A action, Nanaimo host the Victoria Shamrocks Friday night at 8pm. Nanaimo are off a recent win against Port Coquitlam and should play well at home. They will be looking to avenge an 11 - 2 loss against Victoria in Victoria just last week.

On Saturday, the Senior B Timbermen were scheduled to play Tri-City Bandits on Saturday night but that game has been postponed.

Sunday has the Senior A Timbermen opening the 2008 WLA season in Maple Ridge against the Burrards. This should be a good test for the T-Men who will likely be missing Scott Ranger, Kaleb Toth and Kyle Couling as the Calgary Roughnecks will be entrenched in a playoff battle against Portland (NLL).

The JR A Timbermen play Burnaby Lakers (in Burnaby) on Sunday as well. Burnaby and Victoria are 1st and 2nd in BCJRALL standings and this should prove an exciting weekend.
